Green's Top of the Agenda at Markham

The 200-acre Markham Vale development in North Derbyshire is set to become one of the UK’s greenest commercial property schemes, and according to the developer Henry Boot Developments, this will enhance further the development’s appeal among the national and international business community.

This week a tree planting exercise began by Henry Boot Developments and Derbyshire County Council which will see over 375,000 saplings planted around the development’s 700 acres of green spaces. An area of 150 acres will be used for short rotation coppice to provide wood fuel for some buildings on the development. These elements of the project are just some of the initiatives which will position Markham Vale as an environmentally responsible scheme.

Markham Vale will also boast a wealth of `green’ buildings, including one of the UK’s greenest industrial units. At 585,500 sq ft the `Green Giant’ is one of the North’s largest sheds, suitable for large-scale warehousing and distribution requirements. Its wealth of eco-credentials includes photovoltaic and solar panels for efficient energy generation, the collection and recycling of rainwater, with the potential to save over 1 million litres of water per year, and a BREEAM rating of `very good’.

According to Henry Boot Developments’ surveyor Ben Ward (pictured), “We have seized the opportunity to provide energy efficient accommodation that will significantly lower occupiers’ running costs as well as reducing their carbon footprint. This is great news for the individual businesses who will relocate here, and it is also very beneficial for the environment.

“The planting of these young trees is not only a practical benefit to the scheme, it is also symbolic of our commitment to a green agenda that as a responsible developer we consider very important.”

Derbyshire County Council leader Councillor John Williams said: “We set out to make this project as environmentally friendly as possible, using the latest methods in construction to ensure we achieve a sustainable development.

“The Markham Vale Environment Centre is our flagship building on the site and we are proud of its own green credentials, which we want to see reflected across the development.”
